    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a JPG and a NEF file?

JPG is a processed image format designed for convenient storage and sharing, while NEF is Nikon's RAW format. A native NEF contains raw image data from the camera sensor, giving it information that is not present in an ordinary JPG.

Can converting JPG to NEF restore the original camera RAW data?

No. The source file is already a JPG, so the conversion cannot recreate sensor data that was not retained in that JPG. The resulting NEF should therefore not be treated as the original camera-created RAW file.

Why should I create a NEF file from a JPG?

A JPG-to-NEF conversion can be useful when a particular workflow requires a file with the NEF extension or format. However, changing the format does not give the JPG the same underlying RAW information as a photograph originally captured as NEF.

Is a converted NEF the same as a NEF captured by a Nikon camera?

No. A camera-created NEF contains the camera's original RAW data, whereas a NEF created from a JPG is derived from an already processed image. The two files may therefore behave differently in software designed specifically for Nikon RAW files.

Can a converted NEF provide the same exposure recovery as an original RAW file?

No. Highlight and shadow information that was lost when the original image was processed into JPG cannot be recreated by changing the file format.

Can a JPG converted to NEF give me more image detail?

No. The conversion cannot invent fine detail that is missing from the source JPG. Any limitations caused by the original JPG remain in the converted image.

What happens to JPEG compression when the image is converted to NEF?

The source JPG has already been JPEG-encoded, so any information lost during that compression is no longer available in the source. Converting the JPG to NEF does not restore that lost image information.

Can a converted NEF be edited like a native RAW file?

No. Although the output uses the NEF extension, it was created from JPG image data and does not contain the original camera RAW information. RAW software may therefore treat it differently from a genuine camera-created NEF.

Why does some RAW software reject a converted NEF?

RAW applications can expect camera-specific structures and data in a genuine RAW file. Simply creating a file with a `.nef` extension does not guarantee that it contains the characteristics expected from a camera-generated NEF.

Will the converted file contain the original camera settings?

A JPG may retain some metadata, but it does not contain the complete set of original RAW capture information available in a native NEF.

What happens to the JPG's EXIF information?

EXIF information may be present in the source JPG, depending on how the JPG was created. If metadata is stripped during processing, those embedded details may not remain in the output.

Can an edited JPG be converted into NEF?

Yes. An edited JPG can be used as the source for the conversion, but the resulting NEF will represent the edited JPG rather than recovering the original photograph before those edits were made.

What happens if the JPG has already been cropped?

The converted NEF is based on the cropped JPG. The areas that were removed from the JPG cannot be recovered through the conversion.

Can a screenshot or exported JPG be turned into NEF?

Yes, if the JPG is accepted as an input image. However, the resulting NEF will contain the pixels from that screenshot or exported image rather than the original source document or photograph.

Does changing JPG to NEF improve the original photograph?

No. The conversion changes the file representation but does not add photographic information to the source image. Image quality remains fundamentally limited by the JPG you started with.

Can a small JPG become a higher-detail NEF?

Changing the format does not create additional photographic detail. Enlarging the image can produce more pixels, but those additional pixels do not represent newly recovered camera information.

Why does the converted image look different in another photo application?

Different applications can interpret image data, embedded profiles, metadata, and color information differently. A converted NEF may also be handled differently because it is not a native camera RAW file.

Is JPG to NEF useful for recovering an old photograph?

It can create an NEF-format copy of an existing JPG, which may be useful for a particular file-management or workflow requirement. It should not, however, be used with the expectation that it will recover the original RAW capture or lost image information.

Can JPG to NEF recreate the original Nikon shooting settings?

No. Settings such as the camera's original RAW exposure information cannot be reconstructed simply from the finished JPG. The conversion works from the image data available in the JPG.

What is the most important limitation of JPG to NEF conversion?

The key limitation is that the conversion starts with a processed JPG rather than the camera's original RAW data. It can produce a NEF-format output, but it cannot turn an ordinary JPG back into the untouched RAW capture from which it may originally have been produced.

Is there an NEF to JPG option available?

Yes, but it is a separate conversion from this JPG to NEF converter. You can use the NEF to JPG converter when NEF is your source format and JPG is your desired output.
